Corporate learning is an ever-evolving landscape, and Eric Grant knows that. He manages learning and content for Figma’s Product Support function, and has valuable insights into the power of data-informed decision-making when it comes to personalized learning experiences.

We sat down with Eric to learn more about his innovative approach to L&D.

Q: Eric, can you tell us about your philosophy on L&D?

A: I believe the cornerstone of successful L&D is a commitment to continuous improvement. My philosophy is deeply rooted in personalization and data-driven insights, because L&D must go beyond simply delivering content. It should be an immersive, personalized experience that genuinely resonates with each learner.

Q: How do you take that philosophy and turn it into practice?

A: At Figma and in my previous roles, I’ve implemented rigorous data collection and analysis to track the effectiveness of training initiatives. That approach allows us to measure real-word outcomes and consistently refine our training programs to ensure they deliver results.

Q: In your opinion, what’s the true power of data in L&D?

A: Data allows us to personalize learning experiences in pursuit of those real-world outcomes. By analyzing data on individual learner performance, we can customize L&D programs to address gaps in knowledge and skill specific to each learner. Data impacts the overall relevance and effectiveness of L&D programs.

Q: How important is personalized learning?

A: It’s quickly becoming essential. Empowering learners really works, and personalization allows an organization to meet learners where they’re at, to provide them with the exact training they need to grow.

Q: Your approach goes beyond technical skills. Would you elaborate on that?

A: Absolutely. Job performance is not just a skills thing; it’s really a confidence and emotionality thing. We can leverage data to create a journey that empowers learners by meeting their unique needs, yes, but also one that boosts employee confidence and emotional well-being so they can effectively apply what they’ve learned.

Q: What’s the ultimate goal of your data-informed approach?

A: We want to create learning experiences that are richly rewarding for end users, and data provides a valuable blueprint. Organizations can track performance and personalize the journey. They can monitor the emotional components of the learning process to ultimately drive real business results.

Q: What does the future of L&D look like, in your opinion?

A: In the future, data will shape the entire learning experience. A commitment to personalization and continuous improvement will become the gold standard for how organizations support their teams.
